transforming merino combed tops into short fiber merino batts

Would any person know if it is possible to turn merino tops into short fiber batts by any process?

to make it into batts just put it through a drum carder to make it short fiber you would have to cut it into short lengths and then put it through the carder. I would try a small amount to make sure it will work with the carder you have. A fairly fine cloth is needed for short fiber I believe.
